3 More Tips - Moving with Children Part II

Now that we are starting to get a little more settled in our new home, I'm thinking back over how or move went - what went well and we could have done a better way, what we are so glad we did and what we'll never do again!

#1 Pre-order a moving truck

Request a moving truck or van well in advance of the day that you will need it, especially if you live a ways out of town or are wanting to rent the truck or trailer in a small town. If you are moving over a holiday weekend, this is even more important. And, expect delays! If the person renting the truck before you is late in returning it, then it won't be there on time when you go to pick it up. Calling a head of time is a great idea!

#2 Plan for RAIN

We moved the majority of our belongings to storage before we closed on our house. Every time we organized a large move, it rained! Luckily, we had rented a UHaul truck with a ramp, so we could back into the garage and load without getting too wet. Unfortunately this wasn't an option unloading into the storage unit. That means furniture and boxes pretty much got thrown in as fast as they could to avoid getting wet, but now lack any sort of organization!

We moved all our farm equipment - tractor and implements, 4 Wheeler, trailer - to my sister-in-law's farm four hours north of us. It took us 3 trips - all in the rain!

The day we drove 3 hours in our rented UHaul moving van and our Suburban (pulling a car hauler with an FJ Cruiser on top) to move into our new house, it rained! Middle Tennessee is full of beautiful hills, meaning that most driveways are up hill, making it especially hard to move in during an all day rain storm!

#3 Plan for twice the amount of time you think you'll need.

We tend to over estimate how much we can get done in a set amount of time. Add in kids, rain, and other unforeseen complications, and you'll most likely need a lot more time to move than you originally thought necessary. If not, then you've built in a little very-much-appreciated down time in the mist of a move, if you'll over budget on the time required! You'll be glad you did, I promise!

Such fun! Moving is not for the faint of heart! Our little guy has done great with his first big move!
